A study at Texas A&M showed that peach and plum extracts were effective in killing even the most aggressive types of breast cancer cells.
Another study compared the effectiveness of antioxidants known to be in fruits for liver cancer by giving one group of recipients a combination of β-cryptoxanthin mixed with Mandarin orange juice and carotenoids mixture capsules. There were two other groups. One received only the carotenoids mixture capsules. The last group, a control group, received no treatment.
The group receiving the three-part mixture showed the lowest level of liver cancer incidence. The group receiving the carotenoids mixture capsules had the second lowest level of liver cancer incidence. The Control group had the highest level of liver cancer incidence. The reseachers stated that the level of liver incidence between the carotenoids mixture capsules group and the control group was not statistically significant.
Stone fruits in general, and this group specifically, contain β-cryptoxanthin, carotenoids, and Vitamin C, the primary antioxidant in Mandarin orange juice.
Like apples, the soluble fiber in stone fruits, especially plumbs, help normalize blood sugar levels and increases insulin sensitivity and can help prevent and treat type 2 diabetes.
If you’ve read some of my other blogs and pages, you know how much I like apples for their fantastic nutritional value, so the following is a little tough for me to report:
A study at Florida State Oklahoma State universities compared the bone health properties of apples and plumbs. They gave one group of postmenopausal women 100 grams of prunes per day (about 10 prunes) for twelve months. They gave another group of postmenopausal women 100 grams of dried apples per day for the same twelve months. The findings indicated that the prune group had substantially higher bone mineral density in the spine and forearms.
